Shoppers looking to bag a New Year bargain in Birmingham are being urged to watch out for pavement closures as essential gas mains upgrades start in Lower Temple Street and New Street.
Starting on 8 January, local gas network Cadent will be renewing gas pipes in Lower Temple Street. The 12-week project will ensure gas keeps flowing safely to local businesses until the end of the century.
The work will take place in pedestrianised areas and will not affect traffic. However, some parts of the pavement will be closed and alternative pedestrian walkways will be signposted. Vehicles will continue to be able to use New Street for deliveries as usual.
Steve Murray, who heads up Cadent’s gas mains replacement programme in the West Midlands, said: “This work is part of a £65 million investment to renew 370kms of gas pipes across Birmingham and the West Midlands this year. It will ensure local businesses continue to enjoy safe and reliable gas supplies for decades to come.
“We will need to close some parts of the pavement while we install the new gas mains but alternative walkways will be available. We will do everything we can to minimise any disruption.”
The existing metal gas pipes will be replaced with tough, long-lasting plastic ones that have a lifespan of at least 80 years. It is part of an ongoing programme to modernise Birmingham’s gas network.
