Your street has a main gas pipe running along it, as well as a series of small pipes which connect to your home or business. We have to replace all the old metal pipes and need to turn off your gas while we do this. To complete this important work we will dig holes to get to the pipes, turn off your gas, replace the pipe, turn the gas back on then fill in the holes.

Your street has a main gas pipe running along it, as well as a smaller pipe that connects gas to your home. We'll be replacing these with longer lasting plastic pipes. To complete this work we will need to dig holes to get to the pipes, turn off your gas, replace the pipe, turn your gas back on, then fill in the holes and tidy up.

Each of these jobs is done by a different specialist team, one after the other, so don't worry if it looks like one of our teams has left your street – another team will be along shortly to complete the work. As we go along, we'll keep you updated with information about what we've done and what we're going to do next.

Before we start work we will send you a letter nearer the time to let you know when to expect us. When you get your letter with the expected dates, phone the number on the letter and let us know the dates you will be away. We will not be able to finish the pipe upgrade work without accessing your property. This means you will not have gas when you return home.

You might be able to arrange for an adult (over 18) to let us in while you're away, but if not we will arrange to come back and finish the work when you return.

Please wait until you receive confirmation of our works starting before you call to let us know you are going to be away.

Once the pipe laying teams have done their job, our gas fitters go to every property to test gas appliances and safely turn on the gas. If you can arrange to be home all day that day then it may mean we can reconnect you sooner. However, if you can't then don't worry, we work up to 8pm to reconnect everyone's homes.

Please remember that this might mean you will not have gas at your usual mealtimes.

Would it be a big problem to be without gas for a little while?

If your personal circumstances, or those of someone else in your home, means being without gas would be problematic, we want to hear from you. People who are elderly, ill or vulnerable could be eligible for some extra support while their gas is off if they join the Priority Services Register (PSR).

What is the Priority Services Register?

The PSR is a way for gas and electricity companies to know who needs extra help if there's a power cut or emergency gas leak. Most people can cope without their power for a short time, but some people, such as the elderly, or very young, the sick, or vulnerable, would find this very difficult. If you think you, or someone you know, should be on the PSR, phone the company on your gas or electricity bill (or both if you get your gas and electricity from different companies) and ask to speak to someone about being put on the register.

At times it might look like our team has left your street. This is because our gas fitters are in other people's homes reconnecting their gas supply. If you're not in when we call round, we'll leave a card and our contact details.

In the unlikely event you do not have your gas back on by 8pm, please phone the number in the letters we have sent you.

We will test your gas appliances to check they are safe before we turn the gas back on. If your appliance has a fault, it won't be safe to turn your gas back on and we won't be able to reconnect your supply until the appliance has been checked by a Gas Safe engineer. Our engineers are not qualified to repair your appliances so please contact Gas Safe to find a local engineer by calling 0800 408 5577 or going online gassaferegister.co.uk

Once the pipe is laid and the gas is back on, a different team will begin filling the holes. We'll do this in stages, so that each layer of soil or material has time to settle properly which means it may not be possible to do this all in one day. But don't worry; we'll keep coming back until the work is done.

If we've had to dig holes in your garden or driveway we will fill in the hole and replace the patch we've removed with turf, seed, tarmac or paving within five working days. If you have a concrete imprint drive, we will use specialist contractors to restore the patch surface.

If you have a concrete imprint or resin drive, our specialist contractors will restore the patch surface so this may take a little longer.

Where we use any new materials to restore the hole made in an existing surface, there may be a period of time where the new surface will look different from the existing, older surface. We'll try and match it as closely as possible, but it might not look exactly the same, usually because it's new and hasn't had time to ‘weather’.

To lay the pipe safely we usually have to turn off your gas. We do this first thing in the morning, around 8am and contact you at least seven working days in advance to give you the expected date. When we arrive on site we will push a card through your door with an EXACT date of when your gas will be off. In some circumstances we have to turn off your gas twice. If this is the case we will let you know this when we arrive on site.

If the pipes that connect your home to the main gas pipe are metal, they will need replacing. We will need to access your house throughout the day and you will need to ensure that an adult (over 18) is in your home all day to enable us to do this work. We'll provide more details about this before we start work.

1 in 10 homes will also need extra work to have their meter moved to a new location, usually on an outside wall. If this is the case, we will need to do more work inside your home, laying new pipe and fitting a new meter box. We won't know if your meter needs to be moved until we arrive on site, but we will discuss this with you before starting work.

If you usually park on your drive we will try not to restrict access to your driveway, but this isn't always possible and sometimes our holes have to be dug in places which mean you can't use your drive until we've finished the work. Please speak to one of our team when they arrive on site if you're concerned about this.

Sometimes we have to close a road or use traffic management measures like temporary traffic lights. We realise this can be disruptive but we do it to ensure the safety of road users and pedestrians while the work is being carried out. We'll make sure you can still get to your house and will divert traffic if necessary.

While we try to keep disruption to a minimum and use new technology where we can, most of the time we will need to dig holes in the road or pavement to access the pipes. If you usually park your vehicle on the street you will find parking becomes more limited.

You may have to park your vehicle further away from your house than you would normally. If your personal circumstances mean that parking further away from your home would be problematic, speak to one of our team when they arrive on site.

Once we have replaced the pipe to your home we will replace the main gas pipe that provides gas to your entire street.

If you already have plastic pipe to your house we will only need to replace the main in the street. Our engineers will tell you what kinds of pipe you have, and how this will affect your supply, when they arrive on site and have assessed all the houses on the street.

    What are Cadent Doing?

Cadent look after the pipes that bring gas to your home or business.

It's our job to fix leaks, connect new homes and make sure everything is running safely.

Some of the metal pipes have been in the ground for many years and they're now nearing the end of their useful life.

Which is why we're replacing thousands of miles of them with better, longer-lasting plastic pipes.

So how will this affect you? Service pipes connect your home to the gas main in the street. If they're made of metal we'll have to switch your gas off for a day, while we replace it with a new plastic pipe.

Once all the service pipes are replaced well have to switch off your gas supply for a second time while we replace the larger gas main that runs along the street.

We will, of course, fill any holes we've had to dig, once the work is finished.

Cadent realise this can be disruptive and thank you for your patience.

Your new pipes will ensure you continue to get safe reliable gas for decades to come.

    Getting your gas back on

Once all the pipes are replaced a different team of specialist gas fitters go into every home turn on the supply and carry out safety checks.

Often, we'll be working well into the evening to connect everyone up. But, if you still have no gas by 8pm, please phone the number on your appointment letter.

Within 5 working days of turning you back on another specialist team will come along and fill in any holes.

How will the Hole be Filled?

Once the new pipes are laid, and the gas is back on we can bring in our specialist grounds work teams. They'll fill in any holes on your land.

You may find they do some work, leave the site, and return at another time.

This is because each layer needs to time to settle before they put the next layer on top before adding the main surface, such as tarmac or paving on top.

We tend to work on homes first, so the holes in the street will take longer to fill.

Cadent will permanently repair any holes on your property within five working days using materials similar to those already there. Although if your drive is made of specialist material, this may take longer.

For a while the new surface may look different to the existing, older surface because it hasn't had time to weather.

Cadent will also replace or re-seed any disturbed turf or flower beds. If we do replace any grassed areas all you have to do is water them.

What to expect when we disconnect your gas

Service pipes connect your home to the main gas supply. If they're made of metal we'll have to disconnect you for one day while we replace them.

Once the plastic service pipes are in we'll disconnect you again, on another day, to replace the metal gas main.

So depending on what pipes you already have we'll turn your gas off either once, or twice.

On the day of disconnection we will need access to your home between 7 and 9 in the morning.

All our teams carry identification cards so please check them before allowing anyone inside.

Whoever lets us in has to be over 18.

This can be a neighbour, as long as they stay with us.

Your gas will usually be off for most of the day. We know it might be inconvenient but if we are replacing your service pipes someone, again aged over 18, will need to stay in all day as we may need access several times.

If we're only replacing the mains we'll just have to disconnect first thing, and reconnect at the end of the day.

We'll be in touch nearer the time to explain exactly what work needs doing and when we ll disconnect your gas.
