Cadent has confirmed today it will pause its ongoing works on Brabyns Brow, Marple, which is part of the route for the Tour of Britain cycle race.
Engineers have worked through the Bank Holiday weekend to locate the source of a leak.
The teams are working in the carriageway, near to Arkwright Road, and only one lane of the road is open. Temporary lights are managing the flow of vehicles.
This year’s Tour of Britain starts this Sunday (3rd September) with a 163.6km stage from Altrincham to Manchester. The route includes this stretch of road.
After consulting Stockport Council, Cadent has agreed to temporary ‘backfill’ the excavations it has dug in the road and move off from tonight (Thursday) for the weekend.
Gas readings will be monitored all weekend. Subject to no deterioration, the teams will resume their work to locate and fix the issue early next week.
“We have several pipes that run beneath Brabyns Brow and locating leaks on them – as and when they arise – is always challenging,” said Trevor Lubbock, Customer Operations Area Manager, Cadent.
“These pipes are essential for keeping gas flowing to thousands of homes and our job is fix them without interrupting that supply, where possible.
“As requested by the council, I am content we can safely keep this current leak under a monitoring programme over this weekend, to avoid disrupting the Tour of Britain race.
“Assuming the readings do not worsen in the interim, my teams will return early next week to continue this work to locate and fix the leak.”

If you smell gas, always ring the National Gas Emergency Service immediately on 0800 111 999, day or night. Do not assume it is related to this work; it may not be and needs to be checked. All calls are recorded and may be monitored.
Cadent is the UK’s largest gas distribution network with a 200-year legacy. We are in a unique position to build on strong foundations whilst encouraging the curiosity to think differently and the courage to embrace change. Day to day we continue to operate, maintain and innovate the UK’s largest gas network, transporting gas safely and protecting people in an emergency. Our skilled engineers and specialists remain committed to the communities we serve, working day and night to ensure gas reaches 11 million homes from Cumbria to North London and the Welsh Borders to East Anglia, to keep your energy flowing.
Here at Cadent we support the Government’s plans to reach Net Zero by 2050. That means we’re backing the introduction of hydrogen as a low carbon alternative to natural gas for the future. We know people love the controllability of gas and, with our network already in place, it makes sense to switch to the lower carbon alternative offered by hydrogen, which we believe can keep homes and businesses warm for generations to come.
