Our Field Engineers are the operational face of Cadent. They're the Engineers who keep the energy flowing to homes, businesses and thousands of customers - 24/7, 365 days a year. Thanks to them, our nation continues to stay safe, warm and able to sleep soundly in their beds each night. Because, whether responding to emergency calls or carrying out planned work, they're the people who make sure gas gets to where it’s needed – quickly and efficiently.
To put Field Operations into context, we spend £400 million each year providing a gas emergency service focused on safe-guarding life and property, and responding to over 600,000 gas escapes. We also provide metering services and maintain the gas distribution above ground assets. Customer facing, we deliver come rain or shine and operate across various shift patterns, covering all networks.
We’re based across four Network Delivery teams:
Each Network has its own Emergency Response Engineering team, Operate and Maintain Engineering team and Repair Engineering team, who look after that specific geographical area.
What you’ll do
Joining our Operate and Maintain team, you’ll look after pipelines, work on pressure control systems and keep our mechanical and portable electrical equipment well-maintained and running smoothly. It’s an important role. Your expertise literally keeps our energy flowing and ensures our gas network powers homes, businesses and day-to-day life in the communities we serve. There are four key areas within which you can develop your career. Here’s an overview of each one:
Electrical and Instrumentation (E&I):
As part of our Electrical and Instrumentation team, you'll carry out vital maintenance and calibration on all our electrical and instrument equipment for district governors, metering sites, pressure reduction stations and offtakes. Alongside this you'll maintain, calibrate and diagnose faults on gas quality equipment that's used to calculate the energy value of the gas we all pay in our bills.
Pressure control and storage:
Join our Pressure, Control and Storage team and you'll work on regulators and maintain and fault find on above and below seven bar high, intermediate, medium and low-pressure systems at pressure reduction stations, offtakes, district governors and metering sites. You'll also operate and maintain mechanical valves, and conduct maintenance and fault diagnosis on remotely monitored pressure profile loggers and gas conditioning equipment.
Plant, Tools and Equipment (PT&E):
In our Plant, Tools and Equipment team you'll maintain, repair and calibrate all test equipment used in Cadent's gas distribution processes. You'll monitor a range of equipment including electronic multi/process meters and pressure gauges, cable locators, emergency lighting, air lances, portable appliances and breathing equipment.
Pipelines
In our Pipelines team you'll take responsibility for walking the pipeline in order to conduct close integrity surveys, ensure cathodic protection, prevent damage and to keep our pipelines safe. Alongside this they conduct aerial and vantage surveys to ensure pipeline location can easily be identified and no work is been carried out near or on its location.
What’s great about it
The variety. Every day is different. From meeting third party land owners and industrial customers to working on a variety of mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation equipment in the remote countryside or at one of our depots. You’ll be able to gain great satisfaction from knowing what you do really matters and makes a difference to the lives of our customers. So, whether you’ve experience in a pressure asset environment, a strong background in mechanical and electrical engineering or knowledge of street works and cathodic protection – this is your chance to develop a career you can be really proud of.
What you’ll do
Representing Cadent in the community, you’ll liaise with the public and work as part of a two-person team to respond to gas escapes and make sure our customers stay safe. Performing round-the-clock shifts to maintain supply, you’ll work outside and need to be physically fit, as there’s lots of digging involved. You’ll also need to be a good communicator and treat every customer with the care and respect they deserve.
The Repair Support team covers a wide range of jobs. These include locating gas escapes and repairing gas mains, as well as performing gas safety regulation surveys and cutting off the gas supply if required. You'll also deal with poor pressure services, water ingress jobs, relaying services and valve maintenance, working on gas pressures from 0 -75 m/b (low pressure) 75 m/b to two bar (Medium Pressure) two bar and seven bar (Intermediate pressure), and will provide assistance to the emergency services when required.
What’s great about it
It's a varied role, in which you'll always be prepared to expect the unexpected. You’ll meet all kinds of people and work in lots of different locations, so no two days are ever the same. You also gain immense satisfaction from knowing that by restoring a gas supply you’re enabling life to continue as normal. And, by attending a gas escape or repairing a leak, you and your team are responsible for saving lives and keeping customers safe. You’ll build a great rapport with your team, and you’ll be well-rewarded and supported too, as you develop your skills and experience of working on gas mains and operating a range of equipment.
What you’ll do
Qualified as a First Call Operative you’ll mainly work on your own and be the first person on the scene at customers’ homes, responding to reported gas escapes or carbon monoxide activated alarms. Working on both contracted and emergency jobs, you’ll deal directly with customers and the emergency services, often working shifts and unsociable hours. Confident and self-sufficient, you’ll also carry out scheduled installation, replacement and maintenance of gas meters for both domestic and commercial properties.
In particular you’ll monitor gas readings on programmed escapes and perform medium rise, high rise and gas safety regulation surveys. In addition, you’ll fit cooker safety valves, attend meter faults, purge and relights and much more.
What’s great about it
There’s so much to enjoy. From meeting all kinds of people and working in different locations to knowing that by attending a CO escape or meter fault you’re helping to save lives. Even fitting a cooker locking valve gives you the satisfaction of knowing that a vulnerable person can safely stay in their own home. And, the feeling you get from solving a problem and going above and beyond to help a customer is really special. Added to which there’s a sense of freedom and variety to this role, as no two days are ever the same.
